Taiwan is an interesting island because the history is very back and forth between who had control over Taiwan. First, The Dutch claimed Taiwan and called it Formosa. This introduced China's relationship with Taiwan because the Dutch would send Chinese people over to Formosa to work. When the Chinese people and the natives of the land created families, this then created the Taiwanese people. Later, the Chinese took control of Taiwan from the Dutch. After being under Chinese control for many years, the Japanese finally took ownership of Taiwan. In the early 1900s control over Taiwan went back and forth due to the two World Wars. Martial law became enacted over China and Taiwan for many years as well. Taiwan has attempted to be a part of the United Nations, but the UN views Taiwan as under Chinese control. Technically, Taiwan is still part of China. However, Taiwan is independent de facto.
